Tennis Shoes: Do They Really Matter?

Why do I have to wear tennis/athletic shoes for Physical Education class?  I get this question all of the time from kids who wear the wrong type of shoe to school.  I hear things like “I can still run in these” or “My mom made me wear these.”  The truth is I could fill this article with a variety of creative excuses that I have heard over the years. My biggest priority in PE is kids’ safety.  We are constantly moving during class.  Proper footwear is essential for keeping a child safe during this movement time.  Proper shoes need to be supportive and attach securely to the foot.  Proper shoes need to have a rubber, treaded sole for traction.  Proper shoes really need to be designed for physical or athletic movement.  If your child must wear boots due to snow or dress shoes on picture day, fine, but have them pack the gym shoes in their backpack.  I do appreciate your help on this matter.  We all want our kids to be safe at school.
